So, we have had a small disgruntled debate occur recently, on the subject of Multi-class penalties. After some healthy debate on the subject, I have decided to put it to a poll. I invited any DM with an invested opinion to write a short proposal as to why they believe changing this rule could benefit the server or would be important to improve our game. I got exactly 1 post in addition to my own opinion.
Issue: Starting a second class late that isn’t a PrC, Racial HD, or favored class of your race results in a 20% XP penalty that(Either temporarily or permanently, depending on various other factors) puts the character at a disadvantage of falling behind the rest of the party in levels. This is cumulative for each additional class that is outside of the 1 step range of the primary class and not favored, another 20% is added. This can become problematic for people who have had their build trajectory get changed during gameplay, or never really understood the rules, to begin with. While this is unfortunate, the rules are primarily in place to prevent the birth of anthropomorphic cheese wheels from coming into existence.
I would prefer not to have multi-class penalties. They are a soft ban on multi-classing, in the sense that you can totally still multi-class… if you aren’t concerned with having fun or enjoying yourself. It’s a badly designed rule that severely punishes people for daring to customize their character outside the limits of a single class.
If we are to keep multi-classing penalties, I think the simplest way to at least partially fix them would be to give every race Favored Class: any. As much as I love playing humans, the idea that we are intrinsically better at adapting than any other race is a painfully tired cliche that creates a double standard where humans get to be individuals that excel at individual things, while other races are destined to be a specific class no matter who they are or what their upbringing was. It’s insulting from a roleplaying perspective.
I would prefer to keep the system as is. It’s goal is to keep people from switching into gimmick builds. Normally I am a fan of people taking levels, classes, feats, and so on that make sense for their roleplay not an internet build tutorial or other such sources of meta.
A second reason I would like to avoid changing the rules, particularly to ‘Favored Class: Any’ to everyone, is that is a particularly human trait. Humans are highly adaptable and that is represented in 3 traits. An extra feat, an extra skill at every level, and the ability to drop into any profession. It is my opinion that giving ‘Any’ as a favored class to everyone would cheapen humans a bit. It’s certainly not the most used trait that make humans special. But I feel it would be like giving everyone Darkvision 60 feet and Stonecunning would cheapen dwarves.

If you choose to add a new line of your own, I expect a post below outlining your proposal. If no such post exists by the time the poll closes on money additional the additional option added will be disregarded.
